No matter what you drive, you are at risk of being involved in an accident. But when you ride a motorcycle, that accident is far more likely to be a deadly one. In Texas, where winters are relatively mild, riding motorcycles isn’t a seasonal thing—we see them all year. So, motorcycle safety should likewise be a year-round issue.

Just last week, a man was killed in Harris County when another motorist failed yield and pulled into the cyclist’s path.  We often see motorcycle accidents where the car or truck involved is to blame. Perhaps they were distracted or didn’t see the bike. Still, extra care and precaution can be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen.

As a motorcyclist, you must be doubly aware, both for yourself and for other drivers. You must operate as if other drivers are distracted or that they can’t see you. When you are cautious enough for yourself and everyone else on the road, you may be in a safer position than someone concerned only with their own actions.

Being cautious for other drivers is difficult, but it includes looking to ensure they see you, reducing your speed when you are unsure, and making certain that you are following all of the rules of the road.

The Texas Department of Transportation says you should “ride defensively,” keep your headlights on, wear highly visible clothing, avoid the center lane when possible, wear a helmet and other protective gear, and take a safety course to reinforce safe riding.

Other drivers must learn to always keep an eye out for motorcyclists, maintaining a safe distance between themselves and a rider, and always allowing a motorcyclist a full lane.
