People go to trade school to learn how to do a job safely and effectively. They rarely consider that an accident could take place during the learning process. But that’s what happened to two students who were taking classes on underwater welding and construction.

According to KHOU.com, two students nearly drowned at The Ocean Corporation, a private trade school that teaches commercial diving and underwater welding. The two were in the middle of a practice exercise when they were found unconscious. It isn’t clear how long they were unconscious before being discovered, though both were resuscitated.

“We train commercial divers and non-destructive testers,” said the school’s director of student services Jeff Brown. “It was part of their training, so the students were being trained at that time. And we’re just glad that we have such a good staff here that they were able to take appropriate action.”

Paramedics performed CPR at the scene and two Life Flight helicopters transported the students to a local hospital.

From diving school to truck driving school, instructors are paid to teach students the right way of going about their job. They are there to teach people how to do potentially dangerous work in a safe way. So, the risk of an accident is always present.

Officials say this is the first serious accident involving students at The Ocean Corporation since 1969 when it began training students. No doubt serious precautions and safety measures are taken to prevent such accidents.

From well-maintained equipment to well-trained staff, when you put your safety in the hands of another, you want to know that no accident will happen. As a student or consumer, you maintain a certain level of trust in others. But not all accidents can be prevented, particularly by you.

If a company isn’t careful to observe tight safety standards or follow strict safety schedules and rules, you could be the one who suffers. Fortunately, when an accident happens, you may be entitled to compensation.
