A 21-year-old college student beat the odds when he survived a serious car accident. Now, he is dedicating his time to campaigning against texting while driving. It was a single text message that nearly cost him his life.

According to the NY Daily News, Chance Bothe texted a friend while he was driving. The contents of his text message:  “This is dumb. If we keep doing this I’m going to wreck my truck, going to get in a car crash.”

And that’s exactly what happened. His truck careened into a ravine, landing in a creek. The engine landed in his lap and he was pulled to safety just before his truck caught fire.

Bobby was told his son wouldn’t live, or would at least be blind. Chance had broken nearly every bone in his body and suffered significant cranial injuries.

“I broke my sternum and my neck,” Chance told ABC13. “Both my ankles were broken. My face was broken from my cheekbones all the way up.”

Bothe spent months recovering at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, even learning to walk again.

In the months since, changes to his personality have become apparent, but the boy’s father told the station he thinks his son is 80 percent back.

Bothe hopes to return to college and has begun spreading word of the dangers that come from texting and driving.

After six months of recovery, Chance is spreading the word that texting while driving can be life-altering, or even deadly.
