pedestrian-accident-prevention-imageEvery two hours, a pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident last year, and another one was injured every eight minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to the agency, the number of people being killed while walking or jogging has increased over recent years. As a result, the NHTSA has created a new website and made new grants available for the cities with the biggest pedestrian accident problems.

According to a press release, the rate of pedestrian deaths has climbed during the past two years. Recently, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the creation of a website known as “Everyone is a Pedestrian,” where citizens, teachers, and local leaders can get safety tips and resources for staying safe.

In addition to the website, the agency is making $2 million in federal funds available for the 22 cities that have higher than average numbers of pedestrian deaths. In Texas, that includes Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and San Antonio.

“Whether you live in a city or a small town, and whether you drive a car, take the bus or ride a train, at some point in the day, everyone is a pedestrian,” said Secretary Foxx at a press conference announcing the website. “We all have a reason to support pedestrian safety, and now, everyone has new tools to help make a difference.”

In 2011, 4,432 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents. This marked an 8% increase from 2009. Three out of every four of those deaths were in urban areas, and 70% occurred at non-intersections. Another 70% occurred at night, and many of them involved alcohol.

As a pedestrian, obvious safety tips can be gathered from these statistics. Don’t cross the street at non-intersections; always cross at corners. Also, if you have to walk at night, be particularly careful and wear bright, reflective clothing. If you’ve been drinking, take a cab or have a friend walk with you.
