About Houston, Texas

Houston is a major U.S. metropolitan area, with the City of Houston ranking as the nation’s fourth largest city (after New York, Los Angeles and Chicago) and the metro itself ranking fifth in the country by population. The city boasted a population of 2.1 million people in the 2010 census. The Houston metro area was home to 6.08 million people in 2011.

Houston’s economy is based on the petroleum industry, manufacturing, shipping and, as the home of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, aeronautics. Houston ranks third in the country for Fortune 500 companies, with 25 headquartered here. Those companies include ConocoPhillips, Halliburton, Sysco, Kinder Morgan, Marathon Oil, Spectra Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, CVR Energy, Waste Management and KBR.

Heavy industry brings its own costs, especially when companies place profit margin above employee safety. Natural gas and oil field accidents, oil refinery fires, deadly pipeline explosions, chemical exposure, toxic chemical releases, oil spills, petrochemical plant explosions, and heavy equipment and transportation accidents are in Houston area news reports daily. The Port of Houston, one of the United States’ busiest seaports, and the Houston Ship Channel see numerous cargo ship accidents and other maritime accidents.

Houston Area Health Care

Fortunately for those injured in industrial or maritime accidents, or in auto or aviation accidents, the Houston area is also a leading health care center. The internationally renowned Texas Medical Center, which contains the world’s largest concentration of research and healthcare institutions, has 13 member hospitals and is headquartered in Houston.

If you have been hurt in an accident at home or in a private setting, seek medical care immediately. If you have been injured in an industrial, aviation, maritime, construction site or other kind of workplace accident, you will likely be taken to one of several dozen Houston area hospitals.
